Child Found in Rajshahi Pit Rescue Operation Declared Dead
The two-year-old boy, Sajid, who was rescued from a deep pit in Tanore, Rajshahi, has been declared dead. According to Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Tajul Islam, Director (Operation & Maintenance) of the Fire Service and Civil Defence, doctors at the Tanore Upazila Health Complex confirmed the tragic news.
After a 32-hour continuous rescue operation, firefighters recovered the child around 9 p.m. on Thursday in an unconscious state. He was immediately taken to the health complex, where doctors formally confirmed that he had not survived.
Lieutenant Colonel Tajul Islam stated that Sajid was rescued unconscious and sent directly to the health complex for medical evaluation. He added that the medical team would provide details regarding the child’s condition.
Sajid fell into a deep pit that had been dug to assess groundwater levels. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. on Wednesday in Koel Hat Purbo Para village of Tanore. The pit, reportedly dug by a local resident named Kosir Uddin, was illegal. Monsoon rains had caused the pit to deepen further, making it even more hazardous.
According to eyewitnesses and Fire Service sources, an ambulance was kept ready at the site from the beginning of the rescue operation, but no medical team was stationed there. After the rescue, Sajid was rushed to the health complex without delay.
Eight units of the Fire Service were deployed, along with heavy excavation equipment. Rescuers dug up to 45 feet beside the original pit to reach the child. Despite their extensive efforts, the rescue came too late to save Sajid’s life.
Sajid’s mother, Runa Khatun, has been devastated by the loss and demanded punishment for Kosir Uddin. She claimed that he had left several such pits uncovered for the past two years, posing constant risks to villagers. She also alleged that Kosir Uddin visited the site briefly after the incident and then fled.
Tanore Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Shahinuzzaman confirmed that Kosir Uddin is still missing. Police are continuing efforts to locate him and are investigating the entire incident. Further details will emerge as the investigation progresses.
