6 Killed in Lightning Strikes in Chapainawabganj
Chapainawabganj, June 4, 2026:
Six people, including three women, were killed in separate lightning strike incidents across Chapainawabganj, Bangladesh. Four victims died in mango orchards during severe thunderstorms, while authorities provided immediate assistance to affected families.
At least six people, including three women, were killed in separate lightning strike incidents across Chapainawabganj's Sadar, Shibganj, and Nachole upazilas on Thursday afternoon. Four of the victims lost their lives while they were in mango orchards during stormy weather.
Police officials from the respective stations confirmed the incidents.
The deceased were identified as Abdullah, son of Md. Rabbil of Atahar area under Jhilim Union in Sadar Upazila; Mahmuda Akter, wife of Abdur Rob of Chaknarendra village in Chakkirti Union; Sadia Khatun, daughter of Abul Kashem of Ranibari-Bazarpara; Md. Mesbaul, son of Fitu Ali of Shikarpur South Para in Mobarakpur Union; Sumiyara Begum of Lahabari village in Nachole Upazila; and Hasan Ali (Lalu), son of Md. Shafiul of Goshaipur village.
According to Shibganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Matiur Rahman, the three victims from Shibganj were struck by lightning in mango orchards located near their homes. They had gone to collect fallen mangoes during the storm when the tragedy occurred.
Following the incident, each of the affected families in Shibganj received immediate financial assistance of Tk 25,000, said Upazila Project Implementation Officer Mizanur Rahman.
In Sadar Upazila, Abdullah was bringing cattle back from a field during rainfall when he was struck by lightning. Officer-in-Charge Ekramul Hossain of Sadar Police Station said local residents rushed him to Chapainawabganj District Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The cow accompanying him also died in the lightning strike.
Meanwhile, Nachole Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sukomal Chandra Debnath said Sumiyara Begum was returning home after cutting grass in a field when she was struck by lightning. In a separate incident, young farmer Hasan Ali (Lalu) died after being hit by lightning while he was in a mango orchard.
The series of lightning strikes across the district has cast a shadow of grief over the affected communities.
